Before we can examine the differences between European and American Roulette, we first have to find a number of common factors.

Firstly, the most obvious is that both of them are variants of the same game, and are actually very, very similar to one another.

Both European and American Roulette comprise of a roulette wheel and a roulette table where players place their bets.  In both games, the wheel is spun and the dealer throws a ball into the spinning wheel. Payouts are made according to where the ball falls in the numbered slot. 

So What are the Differences?

The Extra Zero

The main difference between the two variants of roulette is the fact that the American roulette wheel has an extra zero added to the numbers.  The European Roulette wheel thus has 37 numbers altogether (numbers 1 – 36 and an extra slot for the single zero), while the American Roulette wheel has 38 numbers (1-36 and an extra two slots for 0 and 00).

The Birth of European Roulette: How did it all Begin?

  If you’re looking for an actual date, it was the mid 1700s that mathematician extraordinaire, Blaise Pascal invented the roulette wheel as a byproduct of his efforts to prove the theory of perpetual motion. Over the next hundred years or so, the wheel was modified over and over again until it came to resemble pretty much what we recognize today.

Turning the Roulette Wheel into a Roulette Game

 Turn the pages of Jacques Lablee’s La Roulette, ou le Jour and you’ll see that European Roulette was already played in the French royal palace as early as 1796.  The book, which was published in 1801, makes some amazing references to the excitement of roulette as we know it today.

 In the 1790s roulette was played in popular Parisian casinos and around the turn of the century, the color green was added to represent the zero.  It was only in 1843 that the entrepreneur Blanc brother, Francois and Louis decided to make it ‘official’ and introduced the single zero style roulette wheel.

 Legend has it that the Blanc brothers signed a pact with the devil, with explains that all the numbers on the wheel add up to Satan’s number, 666.  This fact also serves as fodder to all those anti-gambling ranters out there – but that’s another story…

Distinguishing European Roulette from other Forms of the Game

Since roulette was only played in Europe, it wasn’t necessarily called European Roulette until it had to be distinguished from another variant.  This happened after roulette set sail for distant shores on immigrant ships and landed in the United States.  Suddenly, this single zero game had a competitor, in the form of roulette of a different kind, with a higher house edge and an extra zero.  To distinguish between the two, the original, classical roulette became known as European Roulette, while its newer, double zero cousin was called American Roulette.
